Baby blanket sizing is one of those things nobody tells you about until you're drowning in a receiving blanket that's way too small or tripping over one that's way too big. Here's the no-nonsense guide — including exactly how Wrapped Rad blankets fit into the mix.
Common Newborn Blanket Sizes
- Receiving blankets: 30" x 30" — the classic. Great for swaddling newborns in the first few weeks.
- Swaddle blankets: 40" x 40" to 47" x 47" — larger size gives you more fabric to work with for a secure wrap.
- Stroller/lovey blankets: 30" x 40" — good for on-the-go coverage without being bulky.
- Toddler blankets: 40" x 60" — grows with baby well past the newborn stage.

What Size Is Best for Swaddling?
For swaddling, bigger is better. You want at least 40" x 40" so you have enough fabric to wrap snugly without running out of blanket. Our Small (40" x 45") is a great starting point, and the Swaddle size (47" x 47") gives you even more to work with — ideal if you're still getting the hang of the technique.
How Many Blankets Do You Need?
Real talk: more than you think. Plan for at least 4–6 swaddle blankets in rotation. Babies are messy. Laundry is constant. Having extras means you're never caught without a clean one at midnight. Our bundles are designed with exactly this in mind.
A Note on Fabric
Size matters, but so does stretch. A 47" muslin blanket can be harder to work with than a 40" jersey knit because the stretch compensates for technique. If you're new to swaddling, go jersey knit — and go with a size that gives you room to work.
